Opening Doors

As you may know, my husband was raised in Colorado. He has lived on the east coast for 13 years and has missed his family, the lifestyle, and Colorado's very big blue sky. Moving our family to Colorado is something we have talked about since before we were married.

 

Leading a school as head has been on the horizon for me since I served as Interim Head at The Caedmon School in New York City. In this role I learned that the responsibilities and challenges of headship are many and varied and the sense of having the weight of an entire community's wellbeing on my shoulders was palpable. All of it however, was worthwhile because of the opportunity I had to guide, support, mentor and nurture the students, parents, faculty and administrators. I am excited to be a head of school.

 

With every door we walk through we leave something behind and this is my greatest struggle at this time. During my short time here, Gill has become deeply important to me. As a parent I have witnessed my children's incredible growth as they have truly put down roots here, and my husband and I have formed friendships that I know will last for years to come. As an administrator I have seen our lower school teachers raise their voices and take charge, while critically examining what "they have always done" and engage in professional development that will improve their work with children. And I have learned a great deal about myself and what is important to me as a school leader and as a person.

 

It is important that I am here, at Gill, for another nine months. I am committed to our students, teachers and families. My deepest hope is that the initiatives that have begun under my watch will continue to grow and evolve in ways that will serve the Gill community in reaching its greatest successes yet.

 

It is also important to me to acknowledge that I would not have this opportunity to be a head of school if I did not have incredible colleagues, mentors, friends and family who have supported my growth. Thank you to each of you for what I have learned from you. I will carry these lessons with me always.
