Named Scholarships

The following named scholarships may be used to grant need-based financial aid awards when money is available and students meet the specified criteria for the awards:                  
 
The C.V. Starr Scholarship
This scholarship was stablished in 2002 by The Starr Foundation to support Gill St. Bernard's School's commitment to maintaining economic diversity, which benefits the entire school community. Recipients are identified as "C.V. Starr Scholars" in honor of Cornelius Vander Starr, the founder of the American International Group, Inc. The scholarships are awarded to an Upper School student and may be renewed annually as long as the recipients remain in good academic and social standing.
                                                     
The Fred Corona Scholarship for Excellence
Established in 2015 by a member of the graduating class and her parents in honor of faculty member, Fred Corona, "a remarkable master teacher who has a proven ability to teach young people math in a way that challenges each student without letting anyone become overwhelmed." The scholarship is awarded annually to a seventh-grade student and is renewable through graduation as long as the student maintains a strong academic record and remains in good social standing.

Dunphy Family Scholarship
Established in 1998, this award goes to an Upper School student of color who might otherwise not be able to attend Gill St. Bernard's School. The award is renewed each year or until his or her graduation from GSB, as long as the student remains in good academic standing and is a positive and contributing member of the school community.

Edward E. Ford Scholarship
Established in 2006 by a grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation this need-based scholarship is for an Upper School student whose family may not otherwise be able to accept an offer of admission from Gill St. Bernard's School.
 
Maribeth W. Fessenden Fine Arts Scholarship 
This is awarded to an Upper School student who demonstrates the same spirit of creativity that Mrs. Fessenden, a beloved and distinguished member of the Gill St. Bernard's School faculty, cherished and nourished in her family, friends, and those she taught.
 
Maurice R. Greenberg Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2012 by The Starr Foundation as a tribute to Maurice R. Greenberg, to establish a permanent scholarship endowment to provide scholarship assistance to students on the basis of merit, as well as financial need. The scholarship is renewable annually as long as the student remains in good academic standing and is a positive and contributing member of the school community.

Mimi Washington ’48 Scholarship
Established in 2018, the Mimi Washington '48 Scholarship provides need-based funding to an Upper School student who exhibits an aptitude for, and an interest in, the fine or performing arts. The scholarship is renewable throughout Upper School, provided the student remains in good academic and social standing and continues to participate in classes or extracurricular offerings in the arts. The school selects one Mimi Washington '48 Scholarship recipient per year.
 
Frederick C. Wendeborn '33 Scholarship
Awarded to a new Upper School student with demonstrated financial need, who in the admission process has demonstrated outstanding qualities of loyalty and potential commitment to Gill St. Bernard’s School.
                                                                                                                          
Knights Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 2003 through the generosity of a Gill St. Bernard's School family to support need-based financial assistance for GSB students. Preference is given to Upper School students but an award may be made to a seventh- or eighth-grader. Recipients must be good students who exhibit leadership qualities and will be active in extracurricular activities. The scholarship is renewable annually if the student maintains strong academic and social standing while being active in the Gill St. Bernard's School community.
 
Barbara Willits Evans Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2015 by Jack Evans and The Willits Foundation in loving memory of Mrs. Barbara Willits Evans, the devoted wife of Jack, loving mother of Laura '75 and Caroline '78, and generous and dedicated Lifetime Trustee of Gill St. Bernard's School. The Barbara Willits Evans Scholarship supports need-based financial aid for seventh- and eighth-grade students whose families have demonstrated need above 50% of the cost of annual tuition. Scholarships are renewable as long as the students remain in good academic and social standing. Ideal recipients demonstrate academic promise, leadership potential, and must be active members of the school community.
Gill St. Bernard’s is a private, coeducational day school for students age three through grade 12, located in suburban New Jersey. Each of the three school divisions provides a vigorous, meaningful and age-appropriate curriculum, and all students benefit from the environmental learning opportunities that exist on our 208-acre campus.
